Kanga Cup Wrap-Up (2011)

Kanga Cup Adventure, Wins Silverware

We arrived early in Canberra with the purpose of settling all the families early and preparing for the tournament.  It was cold.. bitterly cold with overnight temperatures getting down to -7 degrees and a wind chill factor during the day of what also seemed in the negatives, so what else is there to do.. but play football.

On arrival most families checked out the accommodation at the Rydges Resort (which was just ideal for the kids and their families) and headed in to town to the “Ainslie Football club” for their famous dinner spread.  A few stragglers found all the meat they could eat (plus a blottle of red or 2) within walking distance from the accommodation at the Stonegrill.

Sunday morning was off to training in sub zero wind chill and with 6 layers the minimum, the boys showed their tough stuff early by donning the training kit and testing their skills on a rabbit hole filled paddock (come cricket ground) which consisted of no green grass.  But they were shown their warmup routine and played a practice game.

The opening ceremony at the AIS indoor arena was an immense affair this 200 odd teams presenting and marching into the arena Olympic style, the team kitted out well in their jackets and pants and marched with heads held high.

Monday morning came and with Hawker reserve being a 40 min drive from Rydges, some families were up at 6 to make the 7:45am meeting and arrive at the ground for a 9am kickoff.

The preliminary rounds (4 games) were scheduled between Monday and Wednesday against Monaro Panthers, Belsouth, Majura Emerging Stars and Queanbeyan FC.  The boys played some scintillating football, in some cases on a poor bumpy pitch, but only conceded 1 goal in the round-robin prelims.

Off the ground, the boys visited and spent an afternoon at Questacon (Scienceworks), and some then went to either/or Parliament house, the War Memorial, Telecom tower or the Mint.

The semi final was a tight affair in the first half, but ran away with the game in the second after being able to get some shots on target.

The grand final at the University of Canberra was against Queanbeyan FC who turned up ready to play.  The first 20 minutes was a tussle, with both sides only limited to the odd chance.  Each teams’ midfield and defence worked overtime trying to gain ascendancy. Then with 10 minutes before the half, Kobi Jennings sent a killer diagonal through ball to Matthew Harrington and Peninsula scored, but the lead was only for a moment, as Queanbeyan scored straight after the kick off – 1 : 1.

Calvin Delaney set up Matthew Harrington who then ran at the defence and slid through the goal low past the keeper.  But again, the lead was short lived with a ball won by Queanbeyan in our last line to enable them to score on the stroke of half time.

The boys now knew that this game was a different scenario and it was “on”, as Queanbeyan have shown they are here and have turned up to play.  Half way through the final half, Alex Woodland running away from goal toward the LHS touch line, in one motion turns and shoots from 15-20m out and clears the goal keeper for a fantastic goal, 3-2.  But again to Queanbeyan’s credit, they fought hard and created their chance in the goal box, 3-3.  The pace is now breakneck speed with both sides trying to create as many chances as possible.  Finally, with 2-3 minutes of play left Kai Pearson takes the ball from the wing to the by- line, with no angle fires hard and deflects off the keeper for the winning goal.  4-3 and the tempo is built to maximum in defences and attacks of both teams.

The final whistle blows and the boys celebrated their reward for hard work on and off the park and more importantly showed maximum respect for their devastated opponents who turned up to play and gave our boys a real run for their money.

The Peninsula Strikers JFC would like to congratulate the players, coaches and parents of all the boys for their achievement.  Some players play their whole careers without winning a league or a tournament.  The most important lessons learnt from this experience are;  play the game in the fair and respectful spirit we want to represent as players, club members and as individuals, always accept the referees decision (be it correct or otherwise) and enjoy and build on the friendships that our game fosters, as these experiences are cherished “together” for a lifetime.  Well Done to all.
